While the story of the first film felt a little too grand to truly capture the feel of the show, the simple scenario works wonders for a series that once reveled in its own simplicity. Monsters also manages to wink at the dated aspects of the old series without making fun of it, more like an homage. There are the classic corny montages, the crazy villains and chase sequences, Scooby and Shaggy searching for snacks, Velma losing her glasses and so on. First off, the story stays in Coolsville and the plotline seems like one that very likely could have worked for the original show, or at least one of the animated films. Bean, the sequel is much more loyal to the feel and fun of the original show.

While the the first movie took place on an island and had a very elaborate plot involving both Scrappy-Doo and Mr.
Nevertheless, Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed should please Scooby fans willing to overlook that aspect. If you couldn't get past the live-action aspect of the first film, you'll likely still have that problem here. While I must admit that I did enjoy the original on some level, Scooby-Doo 2 is a huge improvement. gang returns from the first movie including Fred (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and of course Scooby-Doo himself.Īlong with the original villains from the show, Monsters adds some new red herrings such as "Old Man" Wickles (Peter Boyle), a manipulative TV reporter named Heather Jasper-Howe (Alicia Silverstone), a museum curator (Seth Green) who makes Velma a little hot under the collar and, finally, a fiendish prison escapee played by Tim Blake Nelson. The event quickly goes awry when a masked villain steals the costumes, taking control of them and ultimately sending Mystery, Inc.'s old foes out after them again. and put on display to the public the costumes of many of their most famous foes including The Pterodactyl Ghost, The Black Knight Ghost, Captain Cutler's Ghost and The 10,000 Volt Ghost. The event is set to pay homage to Mystery, Inc. Monsters Unleashed opens with a dedication ceremony at a museum in Coolsville.
